This 2026 PNC commemorates the 60th anniversary of Australia's transition to decimal currency on 14 February 1966. Replacing the complex system of pounds, shillings, and pence, the move to a base-10 system was supported by a massive public education campaign. This release celebrates the enduring legacy of the Stuart Devlin-designed coinage and Gordon Andrews’ vibrant banknotes that redefined Australia’s national identity.
The new coinage originally consisted of 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c. A $1 coin was introduced in 1984. Designed by Stuart Devlin, the coins featured Australian animals. Gordon Andrews designed the brightly coloured new $1, $2, $10 and $20 notes. He also designed the $5 note, released in 1967, and the 1973 $50 note.
