More than 150 years before diplomatic relations between the two counties, Spanish silver dollars struck in colonial Mexican mints travelled via trade routes to the colony of New South Wales, where they were transformation into Australia’s first distinctive coins: the Holey Dollar and Dump. This commemorative coin reproduces the stunning 1813 holey dollar held in the National Coin Collection, with a providence tracing it back to being originally minted in Mexico in 1804.
